Juba, 12th September 2018. Founding Director of the Enough Project urges UN Security Council to establish a new policy and strong actions to support peace efforts in the world.
John Prendergast says those benefiting from the human misery created by conflicts around the globe need to pay financial, legal or political price for the sake of harmony.
He urges the Council and other interested parties to change the dynamics where war is more beneficial than peace to conflict and corruption perpetrators.
There is now no coordinated strategy to gain necessary influence to disrupt leaders and their foreign business partners from illegal taking of money, the director regrets.
Prendergast suggests a network-centred approach to sanctions on corruption, anti-money laundering measures that focus on illicit movement of cash through the international financial system.
He also proposes that prosecutions that concentrate on financial crimes associated with atrocities as another way to curb corruption and conflict.
John Prendergast, Enough Project Director and UN Secretary-General António Guterres were briefing the Security Council on the critical connection between corruption and conflict on Monday in New York, USA.
