Juba, 18th November 2017. Administrators of Abyei welcomed the extension of United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei or UNISFA for another six months.
They say the presence of UNISFA in the region is crucial to keep law, order and provide security for civil population.
Balabak Deng Kuol, Paramount Chief of Ngok Dinka welcomes the renewal of UNISFA mandate in the area.
He says UNISFA’s presence in Abyei is crucial because they are the only law keeping agent in the area.
Deng says UNISFA can still be there to protect civilians as they patiently look forward for the resolution of the final status of Abyei region.
He suggests empowerment of UNISFA to enable the force crack on criminal activities in the area.
The Paramount Chief says several times criminals went unpunished because UNISFA does not have the mandate to persecute.
Abyei Chief Administrator, Kuol Alor Kuol, also welcomes the renewal of the UNISFA mandate.
He admits that UNISFA forces in Abyei have played a very positive role in the area for the last six years in providing security for the local population.
Alor expects UNISFA to continue with the same mandate in providing security for the people.
UNISFA was established on June 27, 2011 under the UN Security Council Resolution 1990 with over four thousand troops.
Its mandate is to monitor and verify redeployment of both Sudan and South Sudan’s armed forces in the region and provide security for civilians in the area.
